From the President
2009 Was a Challenge!

As I reflect on the past 12 months, all I can say I am grateful to be here at the end of them. Not that I didn’t enjoy being the President, but it has been the most challenging year of my life.

The term began quietly enough. Personally, I was fighting a “cold” from the start. The proposal for “Durant Night Out at the Ballpark” seemed like a fair idea. Contributions from the Chamber, Liberty Trust & Savings Bank and the city administrator gave the community the opportunity to buy deeply discounted tickets for an early May River Bandits game. Unfortunately, our game was rained out.

As July 4th approached physically I had lost my voice, and the challenge of sustaining the Durant Firework Celebration arose. The businesses and community of Durant answered the call for funding help with enthusiasm. The fireworks has become a new project for the Chamber.

At the end of July the Chamber held our annual golf outing. Finally, some decent weather graced us. The outing was well-attended and very fun.

Fast forward to the beginning of November, time for our annual fundraiser. The Community Auction was a matter of quality over quantity. We had many fantastic items for auction and some very generous bidders. At the end of the day, the Chamber’s fundraiser was a great success.

It was the following Tuesday when things got serious for my health. I was admitted to the hospital for asthma. I stayed a week and am now much, much better.

Challenges will continue to arise in life and business, and I hope we are all equiped to face them with strength and dignity

As I finish out my term, I look forward to 2010 to be on the upswing for Durant. I will continue on the board as Past President. I enjoy contributing to the success of the Durant Chamber.
